How much will your website cost?

All our websites are unique and everyone's needs are different, so there are no fixed prices. But before you contact us you'll probably want to get some idea of the sort of investment you would need to make.

Clearly a lot depends on the requirements and where we are starting from. If you already have a clear plan of what you want; all the images you need to include; your logo and corporate style; and all the text for your website messages it is obviously going to be a very different price to starting in a vacuum.

Once we have agreed a price we will stick to it

Once we have discussed your requirements and agreed what you want, we will give you an itemised quotation, which will be fixed unless you decide to change the specification or add features and services. And if you do make new requests we will agree any change in the price before we proceed so that you always know where you stand.

You will certainly be able to get a cheaper quote than Leaping Hare - and some that will be shockingly expensive. Generally in life you get what you pay for. But, because we focus on personal service and value for money, we believe that with Leaping Hare you get a bit more than you expected for your investment.

OK, we'll stop beating around the bush and give you some ballpark prices

Leaping Hare symbolThere are three main items that all website quotations will feature: site design, site construction and web marketing.

Site design covers the initial consultation and agreement of the brief; the design in terms of layout, look and feel; the structure and navigation logic; colours and typefaces; plus primary graphics for the site itself. Site design costs start at about £150 for a fairly simple web site.

Site construction covers all the elements involved in creating the actual web site: building the pages, navigation, links, etc; coding of primary functionality; positioning text and images; search engine optimisation tasks such as meta tags; ALT tags and other accessibility functions; forms; loading to server; and, of course, testing. For a site of 5 or 6 pages site construction costs would start at around £275.

Web marketing covers the manual submission of your website to key directories and search engines. Automatic submission to the top search engines is included free of charge. This web marketing service is directly related to your business needs and aims to get your site listed in directories that are vital to your niche market and location. Where appropriate, we will also provide you, at no extra cost, with links to relevant niche advertising sites so you can decide if you want to make a further investment. The cost of this service is normally about £175 depending on your industry sector.

Leaping Hare symbolThat means you could have a totally unique, effective and well-designed web site of 5 or 6 pages for around £600; one that will get found on the web and bring customers to your business. To compare it with other quotes you could say that it would cost £425 for the site and £175 to make sure it gets found. But who wants to have a site that nobody will find?

Don't get worried if you are, for example, an artist and you want to show lots of work. We are just using pages as a guide to price. If you have a lot of images to show we can create a gallery. Just placing an image on a page usually takes a lot less work than a carefully crafted page of text.

Are there any hidden costs?

No. There are never any hidden costs. We are always up front with our prices. There may, however, be other costs depending on your needs.

You may need a logo, copywriting, photography, search functionality, location map, diagrams, or other features. Each of these may be an additional fee. But when you you will find that, if we are doing the whole project, the charges for each element are very reasonable.

Even if you need a number of seemingly complex features don't be afraid to ask for a quote. Some web builders just add up the list of individual features. At Leaping Hare we will look at the job as complete project and always find the whole is cheaper than the sum of the parts.

Ongoing and maintenance costs

There is an annual cost for hosting and you will need to renew your domain name when it comes due.

When you first launch the site there are bound to be small changes or corrections you need to make. There is normally no charge for this. Also, we will be monitoring your site as part of the web marketing service to ensure you rank well in search engine listings and may make changes in the meta tags or suggest changes in text to improve your results. Again no charge.

Leaping Hare symbolIn the months and years to follow you may wish to make changes and additions to the site. If it is something small like a new telephone number or adding a link, then we will just do it for you. Frankly it's not worth the the time and effort to invoice you for it.

But it is important to keep your site up to date and fresh (and search engines can penalise old pages that seem not to have changed for a while). It's your choice whether you want to pay for work as you go or, especially if you are likely to have a lot of changes, to pay a maintenance fee that covers every thing we do for you through the year. A maintenance contract gives you the benefit of never having to worry about what needs to be done and lets you control your budget more efficiently. We simply log the amount of time we spend on your work and, by mutual agreement, adjust the following year's fee up or down depending on whether you have "overspent" or "underpaid". That way it is fair to all and leaves both parties free to concentrate on making your site effective.
